Finding Stillness in the Storm: A Minute to Rebalance

Finding Stillness in the Storm

In today’s world, where unpredictability often feels like the only constant, taking a moment to find stillness can be invaluable. The constant barrage of information—and misinformation—can leave us feeling overwhelmed. But what if the solution could be as simple as pausing for just one minute?

Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of “Wherever You Go, There You Are” and a pioneer in mindfulness, reminds us that the practice of mindfulness isn’t about taking a long time out of our day; it’s about being present in the moment. Similarly, Sir Anthony Seldon, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buckingham, and Professor Martin Seligman, known as the father of Positive Psychology, have both highlighted the power of brief pauses to enhance our well-being and resilience.

To introduce a moment of stillness, try one of these simple practices:

  1. Breathe deeply, focusing on making your out-breath longer than your in-breath to help restore calm.
  2. Listen attentively to the sounds around you, both near and far, noticing details you usually overlook.
  3. Observe a familiar object as if seeing it for the first time, engaging all your senses.
  4. Savour the taste of your coffee, really experiencing the flavour and warmth, the warmth of the cup, and its weight in your hand.

Integrate finding stillness into any part of your day

These micro-moments can restore a sense of balance amidst chaos and are easy to integrate into any part of your day.

Introducing these pauses in schools can teach children to cultivate this valuable skill early on. Practising stillness together can be a powerful lesson in managing emotions and building resilience from a young age.

For those moments when you need a little more, try adding a silent mantra. Professor Paul Gilbert and Professor Frances Maratos of the University of Derby, both experts in compassion, recommend syncing the mantra with your out-breath—using phrases like “mind slowing down” or “body slowing down” to enhance the calming effect.

Stillness can be embraced anywhere—at home, in the office, or even on public transport. It’s a portable practice, a respite available to us at any moment, requiring nothing but a minute and an intention to pause.
